The capital city of Kathmandu has experienced its heaviest rainfall in over 50 years, resulting in numerous fatalities. The intense downpour, which started on September 27 and continued for more than three days, has left extensive destruction in its wake. In Kathmandu alone, numerous residential buildings, educational institutions, and medical facilities have been compromised, with the southern areas of the city still submerged.

The devastation extends beyond the capital, impacting 44 out of Nepal’s 77 districts. The extensive damage includes destroyed bridges and roads, as well as disruptions to power and communication networks, effectively isolating many regions.

Rescue operations involving security personnel and volunteers have managed to save approximately 4,500 individuals. It is believed that over 7,600 families have been critically impacted, particularly those residing in makeshift settlements that have been obliterated.

The disaster has also severely affected infrastructure critical for water and food supply. Damaged water systems and agricultural lands pose imminent challenges in terms of both access and affordability of essential resources in the near future.
